A sombre anniversary
Today, May 25th, 2012, at 10am, it will be 8 years since I started dialysis. When I began, I didn’t think it would last this long, I was thinking it would only be two, maybe three years. I thought I’d get another kidney quickly, like the first two times, or if it went longer than three years, that someone in my family would step up and offer to give me one. But here it is, 8 years,...

How I view my time on dialysis
I rowed my boat out to the middle of the lake. All seemed well until my boat sprung a leak and quickly sank. I was alone and treading water. Every once in a while someone would come along in a nice boat, see me treading water and say, “you look to be doing okay. You don’t need my help.” After a while I started to get tired and it was getting harder to keep my head above water. ...

Guide Dog Saga Pt. 1
I think this one is going to be a fun one… *G*
Last November my mother and I met with Emily, the renal social worker for our dialysis unit. She went over a few things that could help Mom and I fiscally and emotionally. One of the things she asked about was the possibility of a seeing-eye dog for me and how it might give me a little bit more independence.
I loved the idea, since I...

Transplant List Saga Pt. 2
In case you’re wondering, part one is my last post, about the letter.
On Friday, I talked to a friend of mine in dialysis, who’s been on dialysis as long as me, and has had two kidney transplants. It turns out that he received a letter as well, exactly the same as the one I received, so I’m not the only one that the transplant team is screwing with.
So, on Monday, my mother...
I got this nice little letter in the mail today..
..although I’m not overly impressed by it.
It says:
Hi Erica!!!
I was talking in Rounds with the QEII Kidney Transplant Coordinator today and they are requesting an abdominal ultrasound be completed to see if there is enough room to place another transplanted kidney. In the meantime, they have asked that your status be put on HOLD until this is completed and reviewed by the QEII...

In the last year and a half, I’ve lost nearly every friend I had. For most of them, I’ve no idea why. They just kind of disappeared. Now I seem to be losing the ones I had left, and again, I don’t know why. I wish someone would just tell me what the hell I’m doing to drive all these people away. I obviously must be doing something wrong, I just don’t know what it...

This is a bit of a rant, so don't say I didn't...
I’m getting so sick of seeing people on facebook and twitter asking the public for a kidney donor. The latest one I’ve seen is of a woman in Vancouver who’s transplanted kidney is failing, and she is looking for a new donor. She doesn’t want to go on dialysis. Big fucking deal. I’ve been on dialysis for 7 and a half years. I’ve been waiting my turn like...

#RUTR Update
I got my first non game cup today, which means supplies are running out. NOOO!! Good thing there are seven Tim’s locations in Charlottetown, nine if you include the Winsloe Irving and the Stratford Home Hardware store. I can just go to another location. Once they are all out of cups, it’s time for me to switch to Iced Caps anyway.
I’ll keep my tally going until I can’t...

Yeah, I know I’m a little late. I could say that life got in the way, and it would sound normal, but the truth is, I just got lazy. However, I did not get lazy enough to not drink my way through more than a few Extra Large French Vanilla Cappuccinos. So, here’s where I stand.

Tim Horton's Roll Up the Rim to Win Contest
I participate in this contest/promotion every year, cuz I love my Timmies. This year is the 25th anniversary of Roll Up the Rim, which I think is pretty cool. I didn’t realize it had gone on that long.
I try to keep track of my wins and losses, and this year is no different. I’ll try to update about once a week, while the promotion goes on, till around the end of May. Here is how...

20 Years
Twenty tears ago today, February 21, 1991, was the day we found out that I needed dialysis. I was 12. We didn’t know anything about kidneys or anything like that. We pretty much learned as we went. It’s still an ongoing learning experience. Back then, I didn’t think that twenty years later, I’d still be doing the same thing. I always thought that by now I’d have a...

Watson has made a few mistakes, so it’s a bit of a toss up on who will win. Watson rings in even if he’s wrong, and there was a few answers that he gave that I had no idea hwere they came from.. I like Brad Rutter, though. I’d like to see him win

So, let’s see…

I’ve explained this before, but I’m feeling a need to explain it again, and 140 characters just isn’t enough to say it right. Yeah, it’s cool, and it’s a way to get new followers, if that’s what you’re looking for. My problem is this. On Friday afternoons, from around 2pm till around 6pm AT, I’m in dialysis. When I’m there, I connect to the...

Jon Stewart's Post 9/11 Monolgue →
In honor of this weekend’s somber anniversary, I wanted to show this video. Jon seemed to sum up what everyone was thinking at the time. He showed us a bit of his true self. I cry when I watch this video, because he is the man who makes us laugh. He shows us his heart, and he makes us cry, something that only a few funny men can or will do
Jon Stewart is, and always will be one of my...

What a week
On Monday, the nurses decided to try a different spot for my needles, to avoid aneurysms. It was also a blood work day. They did get the needle in, and were able to get the blood out, but the second they began to flush the line, my arm started to burn. The one good thing, the nurse who got the blood is one who’s known me for six years, even though I’ve only been doing hemo for a...

I would wish for my mom to have no more worries. From not having to worry about how she’s going to pay the bills to not having to worry about me and my poor health. She doesn’t deserve to worry as much as she does and I would love it if she could have a worry free life.

Meet Mr. Killjoy: Via Twitter
@rikimae: Dinner For Schmucks is a good movie. Very funny
@unambig: @rikimae I understand the movie is ripped off a French film without acknowledgment?
@rikimae: @unambig it was acknowledged in the credits
@rikimae: @unambig mr killjoy. Holy fuck
@unambig: @rikimae Are you calling me a kill joy? I was just repeating what I read in 24 hours newspaper.
@rikimae: @unambig the newspapers were wrong, as it was acknowledged. I was at the first screening in Canada. It's not out till tomorrow
@unambig: @rikimae Ok. My mistake. Shouldn't believe everything I read.
@rikimae: @unambig that's actually a good rule of thumb
@unambig: @rikimae Which is why I won't believe your recommendation of thumbs up ;)
@rikimae: @unambig do you have to work hard to be a douche? My distinction of you as Mr. Killjoy stands
@rikimae: @rikimae Fuck off Riki.
Act like a douche, expect to get called on it. Unambig, I'm glad I don't see the world as you do. I'd probably have killed myself a long time ago if I did.

Dialysis is not a death sentence, nor is it just...
I spent a bit of time today watching some videos that were aimed at possble future dialysis patients. Some of what I watched were patient success stories. While that is great, and there is a greater need for patient to patient support, I noticed a few things.
One, so many say that your life doesn’t have to stop when dialysis starts. While I don’t have any issue with that in...

There's more to PEI than red haired orphans
With Regis and Kelly being on Prince Edward Island this week, I’ve been disappointed with the constant plugging of Anne of Green Gables. PEI is so much more than that, but it seems to be everything they’ve talked about. Anne of Green Gables, and seafood. Not that PEI’s seafood isn’t great, it’s world famous. I just think that since this was a Prince Edward Island...
